The Bouchard Pere & Fils Chassagne Montrachet 2018 has an intense floral and fruit aromas on the nose. Full-bodied, rich and smooth, this wine has a very lingering aftertaste. Good ageing potential.

On the south of the Cote de Beaune, the village of Chassagne became Chassagne- Montrachet in the 19th century, thereby benefiting from the notoriety of the mythical Grand Cru which it shares with Puligny. Facing east-south-east, the vineyards are planted with both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which produces some of the finest white wines in the world. White Chassagne-Montrachet has an intense bouquet and remarkable persistence.

This Beaune 1er cru “Grèves Vigne de L’Enfant Jésus” Domaine 2017 from Bouchard Père & Fils takes its name from a historical anecdote linked to the Carmelite Marguerite du Saint-Sacrement. Indeed, she is said to have predicted the birth of the future King of France despite the infertility of his mother, Anne of Austria. This vineyard took the name of “Vigne de L’Enfant Jésus” following the birth of Louis XIV. Sold in 1791 during the sale of national assets, this terroir, with an east/south-east exposure on very gravelly clay-limestone soil, has since been the monopoly of the Bouchard Père & Fils company.

This wine has a strong wood and menthol elements all but dominate the earthy and spicy red dark pinot fruit scents. The sleek, intense and well-defined medium-bodied flavors exude evident minerality onto the much more complex and persistent finale where the wood telegraphed by the nose reemerges. This is really quite good though note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the generous wood will ultimately be successfully integrated.

The best of Bouchard’s array of Meursaults in 2017, this hails from two parcels, both in Genevrières Dessus; a total of 2.65ha. Pale, scented and well balanced, it has spicy 15% new wood, good texture and weight, and notes of citrus and beeswax. Drinking Window 2020-2025.

The Bouchard Pere & Fils Meursault 2017 has aromas of lemon and lime oil, hazelnut and vanillin oak come across as rich and fully ripe but lively. In a distinctly rich, pliant, almost glyceral style, showing hints of banana and exotic fruits.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village exhibits notes of sweet raspberry fruit, spices and smoky oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate with a juicy core of fruit, chewy tannins and appreciable amplitude and power. This hails from an old-vine parcel that Bouchard has purchased for many years and which contains an appreciable percentage of Pinot Gris–not uncommon in Vosne-Romanée.

The 2015 BriO de Cantenac Brown wine is a rich, exotic wine from Margaux. The 2015 BriO de Cantenac Brown wine is simply stunning. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, espresso, licorice and leather all flesh out in this ample, voluptuous Margaux. A rush of super-ripe dark cherry, plum, violet, lavender and sweet French oak builds as this plush, explosive wine shows off its bold personality. The 2015 is quite concentrated and extracted in style, and yet all the elements are wonderfully fused together. I would give the 2015 at least a few years to assimilate some of its new oak.

This Cap Royal Rouge wine has an expressive and complex nose, with primary aromas of toast, vanilla and ripe red fruits. After aeration, secondary notes of menthol and spice mixed with cedar develop. On the palate, the mouth feel is rich and silky with elegant tannins. The 2018 Cap Royal Rouge Bordeaux Superieur wine finish is long, aromatic and delicious, structured and oaky yet always maintaining finesse

The Cap Royal Bordeaux Supérieur is a ‘sum of its parts’ sort of wine. Jean-René Matignon, winemaker at the renowned Chateau Pichon Baron, is in charge of the wine each vintage and uses his extensive connections in Bordeaux to source grapes from vineyards he sees fit for the year’s blend. This allows him to select the best fruit to achieve his vinous goal without being limited to one plot of land. The 2018 vintage is 75% merlot and 25% cabernet sauvignon. Intensely coloured with a nose of blackberry, blueberry and spice, the wine expresses more dark fruits, vanilla and toasted oak on the palate. It’s powerful and rich, yet refreshing.
