The wine is brilliant and violet-edged ruby in color, the 2012 Inglenook RC Syrah shows fresh, vibrant aromas of plum, blueberry, tobacco, and forest floor. The wine is superbly balanced on the palate, with well-defined notes of fennel, cedar, and allspice, which emerge gradually. The texture is velvety, supported by extremely well-integrated French oak, and the long, aromatic finish resolves perfectly.

Roman Coppola, a Syrah aficionado fond of both the Australian heavyweights as well as the more pedigreed Syrah-based wines from the Northern Rhone, worked with the Inglenook winemaking team to create an estate Syrah that combined the nuance and texture of ‘old world’ Syrah with the powerful fruit of ‘new world’ Syrah. Our terroir provides optimal conditions for producing this rich, opulent wine.

Our most recent tasting of the 2011 Inglenook Rubicon revealed a complex nose that includes notes of graphite, dark red currants, and a floral potpourri of dried rose petals with hints of allspice. This wine demonstrates a refined richness, yet its intensity does not weigh down the palate. The flavors exude a freshness, complemented by nice acidity. Impressions of juicy dark cherries, tobacco, and currants are most prevalent, while notes of spices, tea leaves, and an intriguing earthy quality create a more rugged wine that is very expressive of its unique terroir. The wine’s essence is further enhanced by fine-grained tannins, which support an elegant structure and refined finish that boasts deep aromatic notes of espresso.

A solid wine for the 2011 vintage with bright and vivid aromas of blackberry, black currant, spice and walnut character. Full body, silky and refined.

In the glass this 2019 Jim Barry Annabelle’s Rose shows a pale pink hue. The nose opens with lifted notes of fresh red summer fruits and rose florals. The palate displays a generous burst of raspberry flavour with lashings of florals and a touch of savoury spice. A refreshing line of acidity complements the red berry flavours. The rose wine finishes with savoury spice and a fine, chalky texture.

A Rosé wine to be enjoyed now but will reward cellaring for five years.

This 2015 Jim Barry Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep crimson red in the glass. Intensely aromatic with a mix of dark vine fruits, dark chocolate, fresh garden herbs, cedar oak and a touch of earth. The palate is flooded with generous dark berry flavours with savoury notes of earth, clove and cedar. Very fine, mineralic tannin lends length and style to a wine of great presence and persistence. The Benbournie has been created to be enjoyed upon release after a period of long term cellaring (under correct conditions) to enhance the wine’s qualities. 14% Alcohol.

The 2021 Jim Barry Bros Shiraz wine is fruit driven and intensely flavoured blend brimming with red and black fruits combined with a touch of chocolate and spicy eucalyptus on the finish. The 2017 Jim Barry Single Vineyard Shiraz bright wine on the nose, with bramble, purple fruits, spice and a violet floral trim. A commanding entry on the palate, with concentrated brambles and plums, deep woven spice, pretty floral detailing and a super fine but chewy tannin profile. Located in the Clare Valley region of Australia, the Jim Barry wine label was established during 1959 by Jim Barry. The wines produced by him were known for their unique character and flavour. When he started making wines in this region, he was the first qualified person to do so. His wines were mostly made from varietals such as Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, his family members have taken over this brand.

The authentic and beautifully concentrated 2018 Jim Barry Armagh Shiraz, is a powerfully-compressed wine that explodes with aroma and flavour. This Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz wine intense, plush and generous, the oak is hidden behind curtains of deep, ripe, intense fruit and extraordinarily fine, structured tannins.

The vineyard is hand-harvested, with several passes, to achieve optimum ripeness and flavour profile. Vinification takes place in two-tonne, open-top fermenters with heading-down boards. Regular rack-and-return and pump-overs take place to optimise extraction of colour and flavour; in some vintages post-ferment maceration may be an option. At completion of fermentation the wine is pressed off and matured in a combination of new and old French and American oak hogsheads for 13 to 19 months.

“My pick of the recently bottled vintages, the 2016 The Armagh Shiraz shows a bit more obvious oak (simply because of its youth) but also a wonderful taut tension between ripeness and acidity. The fruit here is a bit redder in profile, leaning more toward raspberries than blackberries, while still being fully ripe. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes cedary, intense and long, adding in complex, lingering spice notes.”

This is a terrific value in balanced, ready-to-drink Australian Cabernet. It brings several Bordeaux-ish qualities to the table-medium body, silky tannins and aromas reminiscent of cigar box and Ribena-then adds varietally true flavors and a long finish. The Jim Barry The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 wine is a classic Coonawarra style of Cabernet.

The Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Riesling 2016 is delicately poised with mouth watering acidity balanced with lime juiciness and lifted orange blossom florals. The palate has great presence with a fine chalkiness leading into a persistent finish.

The 2020 Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz wine has a dark, inky red hue. Vibrant dark forest fruits of blackberry and plum are complemented by a rich streak of earthy goodness. This McRae Wood Shiraz wine shows a generous girth with rich fruit cake fruits, cherry, and blackberry supported with balanced acidity and complex, delicate grained tannins.

The 2022 Watervale Riesling has all the hallmarks of a classic Clare Valley Riesling; with fresh cut citrus, lemon grass, yellow peach and white florals on the nose. This Jim Barry Riesling has a firm acid drive, with an abundance of citrus, white peach, honey dew melons, gooseberries and a fresh lime finish.

South Australia’s Clare Valley, besides being one of Australia’s prettiest wine regions, is ground-zero for Riesling and a large selection of the countries finest examples. Approximately 120km north of Adelaide, the Clare Valley boasts a great diversity of soil types and a number of famous sub-regions along its length such as Polish Hill River, Watervale, Leasingham, Sevenhill and the Skillogalee Valley.
