The 2018 Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon wine has a sweet vanilla and cedar aromas mesh beautifully with the bouquet of blueberries, violets and cassis. The 2022 Henschke Henry’s Seven Shiraz Grenache Viognier wine has attractive aromas of spiced plum, red currant and blue and black berry fruits are met with floral nuances of violets and black pepper spice. The round, supple palate is filled with juicy blue and red fruits, spiced plum, liquorice and notes of crushed tarragon, with beautifully textured svelte tannins and a long, peppery finish. This Henry’s Seven Shiraz Grenache Viognier wine has deep crimson with ruby hues.

The Henschke Julius Eden Valley Riesling 2015 is green gold in colour. The nose is very lifted, floral and perfumed with rose petals, citrus blossom, lime/lemon zest, hints of slate and green peppercorns. The crisp, dry palate shows sweet fruit with rich flavours of lemon and lime, fresh acidity and excellent length.

The 2018 Henschke Keyneton Euphonium Shiraz Cabernet Merlot wine is from the Eden and Barossa Valleys. This Keyneton Euphonium wine is blended with cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc from selected vineyards in both regions.

This Henschke Keyneton Euphonium Shiraz Cabernet Merlot wine has a very deep crimson with red hue. Alluring and spicy aromas of red currant, Satsuma plum, red liquorice and black pepper with herbaceous layers of bramble, sage and rosemary. Concentrated and elegant flavours of succulent red currant and blue berry fruits are balanced with black pepper and a hint of violet florals, while a clean line of acidity and fine-grained tannins add length and texture.

The Henschke Lenswood Croft Chardonnay has bright gold-green in colour. Sweet, lifted ripe and complex with pear drop, peach, clove, spice, cashew nut, and hints, of grapefruit and lemon. This Chardonnay has a rich full complex concentrated and intense palate with layers of flavours, mineral and apricot kernel, good acidity and texture with excellent depth and length.

The Hill-Smith Estate Eden Valley Chardonnay has a pale good with tingers of green hues. On the nose, smoky wild yeast complexity and subtle notes of struck flint interwine with aromas of white nectarine, grilled cashews and citrus blossom. This Chardonnay  is full flavoured and textural on the palate, with creamy white nougat, citrus zest and ripe quince and melon flavours. The richness is held in check by a restrained grapefruit acidity and a savoury finish.

In the glass this 2019 Jim Barry Annabelle’s Rose shows a pale pink hue. The nose opens with lifted notes of fresh red summer fruits and rose florals. The palate displays a generous burst of raspberry flavour with lashings of florals and a touch of savoury spice. A refreshing line of acidity complements the red berry flavours. The rose wine finishes with savoury spice and a fine, chalky texture.

A Rosé wine to be enjoyed now but will reward cellaring for five years.

This 2015 Jim Barry Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep crimson red in the glass. Intensely aromatic with a mix of dark vine fruits, dark chocolate, fresh garden herbs, cedar oak and a touch of earth. The palate is flooded with generous dark berry flavours with savoury notes of earth, clove and cedar. Very fine, mineralic tannin lends length and style to a wine of great presence and persistence. The Benbournie has been created to be enjoyed upon release after a period of long term cellaring (under correct conditions) to enhance the wine’s qualities. 14% Alcohol.

The 2021 Jim Barry Bros Shiraz wine is fruit driven and intensely flavoured blend brimming with red and black fruits combined with a touch of chocolate and spicy eucalyptus on the finish. The 2020 Jim Barry Bros Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon wine is juicy and vibrant with aromas of blue black fruits with lifts of violet florals and spicy highlights. The palate is lively and bright with a burst of red fruits and a dark fruited drive. This Jim Barry Bros Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon is a great match for chicken in a creamy and tarragon sauce.

The 2017 Jim Barry Single Vineyard Shiraz bright wine on the nose, with bramble, purple fruits, spice and a violet floral trim. A commanding entry on the palate, with concentrated brambles and plums, deep woven spice, pretty floral detailing and a super fine but chewy tannin profile. Located in the Clare Valley region of Australia, the Jim Barry wine label was established during 1959 by Jim Barry. The wines produced by him were known for their unique character and flavour. When he started making wines in this region, he was the first qualified person to do so. His wines were mostly made from varietals such as Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, his family members have taken over this brand.

The authentic and beautifully concentrated 2018 Jim Barry Armagh Shiraz, is a powerfully-compressed wine that explodes with aroma and flavour. This Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz wine intense, plush and generous, the oak is hidden behind curtains of deep, ripe, intense fruit and extraordinarily fine, structured tannins.

The vineyard is hand-harvested, with several passes, to achieve optimum ripeness and flavour profile. Vinification takes place in two-tonne, open-top fermenters with heading-down boards. Regular rack-and-return and pump-overs take place to optimise extraction of colour and flavour; in some vintages post-ferment maceration may be an option. At completion of fermentation the wine is pressed off and matured in a combination of new and old French and American oak hogsheads for 13 to 19 months.

“My pick of the recently bottled vintages, the 2016 The Armagh Shiraz shows a bit more obvious oak (simply because of its youth) but also a wonderful taut tension between ripeness and acidity. The fruit here is a bit redder in profile, leaning more toward raspberries than blackberries, while still being fully ripe. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes cedary, intense and long, adding in complex, lingering spice notes.”

This is a terrific value in balanced, ready-to-drink Australian Cabernet. It brings several Bordeaux-ish qualities to the table-medium body, silky tannins and aromas reminiscent of cigar box and Ribena-then adds varietally true flavors and a long finish. The Jim Barry The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 wine is a classic Coonawarra style of Cabernet.

The Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Riesling 2016 is delicately poised with mouth watering acidity balanced with lime juiciness and lifted orange blossom florals. The palate has great presence with a fine chalkiness leading into a persistent finish.

The 2021 Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Shiraz wine is from the Clare Valley in South Australia. This Jim Barry The Lodge Hill Shiraz is a full bodied yet elegant Shiraz. Mulberry, raspberry, coffee, bramble and chocolate with ripe tannins. A great example of modern Australian shiraz from the picturesque Clare Valley.

Unlike some blockbusters of yesteryear, this is a fragrant, medium-bodied shiraz of lovely varietal purity. This Shiraz has aromas of floral, herbal and spicy, with a generous core of ripe berry fruit on nose and palate. Texture is silky and fine with lingering flavours backed by balanced, easy tannins.

The 2020 Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz wine has a dark, inky red hue. This Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz shows lifted notes of blackberry and blueberry briary fruits, licorice, perfumed- violets, and a lick of toasty vanillin oak. The palate is restrained in its youth, whilst having the concentration and depth the McRae Wood is famous for.

Vibrant dark forest fruits of blackberry and plum are complemented by a rich streak of earthy goodness. This McRae Wood Shiraz wine shows a generous girth with rich fruit cake fruits, cherry, and blackberry supported with balanced acidity and complex, delicate grained tannins.
